Adventure with Micro: Top Scooting Routes

With the help of our friends at Sustrans we have chosen some of our favourite places to scoot on the National Cycle Network. These routes are flat, well surfaced and easily accessible from town or city centres. Sustrans’ online mapping lets you search for other traffic routes near you.

Swansea Bike Path, Wales

Following the wide curving sweep of Swansea Bay, this 6 mile traffic free route offers fantastic views across to Mumbles Head and the start of the Gower Peninsula. At the end of the route is Verdi’s where an ice-cream is a must.

Hastings and Bexhill Waterfront

This 3 mile traffic-free route runs along the waterfront offering fantastic seaside views along the way. You’ll pass Hastings Pier being rebuilt.

Exe Valley Route, Exeter

The 5 mile route follows the western bank of the River Exe from Exwick, through Exeter’s historic and attractive Quay, and then through the Riverside Valley Park between the Exeter Canal and the river to the village of Exminster.

Aire Valley Towpath, Leeds, Yorkshire

This 17 mile route between Leeds and Bingley provides a wonderful opportunity to explore part of the longest canal in Britain. The route travels past beautiful countryside, shops and even a world heritage site.

Family Scooting Routes

Bristol to Bath Path, Bristol

The 13 mile path features a variety of sculptures and a working steam engine at the old train station at Bitton. Enjoy a pub lunch at Saltford, with wonderful views of the River Avon.

Derby Canal

Starting near Derby city centre, this 13 mile route follows an attractive path alongside the River Derwent before turning south on the Derby Canal Path to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Swarkestone and onwards to Cloud Quarry.

Consett and Sunderland Railway Path

The full route is 26 miles, which mostly follows the line of the former Stanhope & Tyne Railway. The route into Sunderland takes you past the new Stadium of Light, along the riverside, through the marina and onto the beach at Roker.

Union Canal, Edinburgh, Scotland

The canal stretches for 35 miles from Edinburgh to Falkirk. The scenery is industrial as the trail leaves the historic city, but soon opens out into a beautiful, scenic ride, passing over spectacular aqueducts and under pretty bridges, through the towns of Broxburn and Linlithgow with its palace, to Falkirk.

Cuckoo Trail, Polegate, East Sussex

The 14 mile trail is one of the most popular family cycle rides in the South East and runs through a mixture of broadleaf woodland, open grassland and farmland. Along the way are dramatic sculptures and plenty of carved wooden seats to stop and take in your surroundings.

Nutbrook Trail, Heanor, Derbyshire

The 10 mile trail takes you through the beautiful Shipley Country Park, which covers over 700 acres. The park has earned the Green Flag Award, the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales, every year since 2008.
